Alberta SPCA The Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a provincially incorporated nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of animals. The mission of the Alberta SPCA is to have every animal in Alberta humanely treated. The Alberta SPCA has worked toward this goal since its inception in 1959 through enforcement of animal protection legislation, conducting humane education programs in schools, and through community education. The Alberta SPCA has been a partner in the Alberta Livestock Protection System since it was established in 1998.

In 2002, the Officers conducted a total of 1,782 investigations (livestock and companion animals). A total of 386 animals were removed from distressful situations in 35 cases. Charges were laid in 12 instances seven resulted in prosecutions and five were pending at year end. Two other cases from 2001 were also successfully prosecuted. Nearly a quarter million animals were seen by officers while conducting inspections at 185 auction markets, assembly plants and slaughterhouses (involving 227,908 animals); 1,669 livestock hauling vehicles (12,743 animals); and 11 pet shops, pounds, kennels, rodeos and other facilities (2,823 animals). AFAC is working with the Alberta SPCA to provide the livestock industry with a breakdown of the livestock only cases.
