Humane Handling Guidelines

"Most producers are already reaching high standards of animal care, but these standards cannot be seen as optional"

"Marketing unfit hogs is absolutely unacceptable and it is the responsibility of anyone owning or handling livestock to ensure this does not occur". - K. Chomlak

AFAC together with its membership organizations, Alberta Pork, Alberta Milk, Alberta Beef Producers, Alberta Equine Welfare Group and Alberta Sheep and Wool Commission have developed humane handling guidelines for livestock.

A priority for AFAC is to reduce the number of unfit livestock entering the marketing system. Clear defined guidelines have been developed by the industry stating what is humanely acceptable to load on a truck and what is not.

These guidelines are endorsed by all respective livestock organizations, the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association and the Alberta SPCA.
