Horse Welfare Alliance of Canada (HWAC) HWAC website HorseWelfare.ca 08 Jul 14 ... The Alberta Equestrian Federation (AEF) in concert with affiliates of similar interest to represent the horse industry in Canada hereby announces the formation of the “Horse Welfare Alliance of Canada”. There is ongoing negative publicity with respect to the horse industry and specifically a documentary by CBC which apparently was inspired by the “Horse Defense Coalition”. HWAC will bring together associations which endorse responsible use and care of horses during their lifetime and at their death to ensure that a high standard of health and welfare of the horse is maintained throughout their life regardless whether a horse is purpose bred for performance or food. HWAC will strive to provide a strong unified voice across Canada in support of values and ethics related to horse ownership, use and the industry in total. HWAC recognizes and endorses the Statements of Principal, Legislation and Regulation administrated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) which governs the processing of livestock including horses and further HWAC recognizes that horse meat for human consumption is a democratic choice for some Canadians and others in the world. In Alberta we consult and participate as a stakeholder on behalf of the AEF membership in partnerships with various divisions of the Ministry of Agriculture, Alberta Farm Animal Care, Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, Alberta Equine Welfare Group, SPCA, and with other livestock organizations. Our diligent effort on behalf of AEF members, industry and all horse enthusiasts will continue. Questions and comments may be directed to AEF Breeds and Industry Chair Bill desBarres 403-526-1070 or AFAC Manager Susan Church 403-932-8050. |
