The Handling of Spent Hens in Alberta

An Update Report

The Alberta Egg Producers Board (AEPB) and AFAC first prepared a report on the handling of spent hens in Alberta in late 1999. Much has changed since then as no federal plants now accept spent hens. This updated report presents data as of December 31, 2001.

It was prepared to increase awareness and understanding of the issue by the egg industry and those working very closely with it. This will enable industry representatives to communicate accurately to public or media on the subject.

The report itself is not intended for public or media distribution.

The report includes:

  • flock disposal options for spent hens and discusses the on-farm disposal methods used in Alberta;
  • recent flock disposal statistics, collected by the Alberta Egg Producers Board.
Through comparisons with other parts of Canada, this report demonstrates that Alberta egg industry is leading the way to establish humane on-farm disposal methods that eliminate the need to transport live hens and minimize the stress of handling.
