Redesigning Battery Cages to Improve Hen Laying Welfare (September 2002)

The overall purpose of this research is to improve the cages of laying hens by providing perches, increasing cage space and creating a suitable nesting site with solid sides, pecking strips, and nest linings.

This will be done through two approaches:

• Modifying existing capital
• Investigating commercially enriched cages
