Alberta Farm Animal Care (AFAC) is unique in Canada. In 1993 it was founded by Alberta’s leading livestock commodity groups and is a membership-based, non-profit organization dedicated to advancement of farm animal welfare through advocacy, transparency, education, and outreach. AFAC works with partners from all across the livestock sector value chain to develop new resources, create and provide training programs, administrate workshops, help counties to develop bylaws surrounding livestock and their welfare, and provide information and engagement opportunities to the public.
AFAC works to support livestock producers of all types and sizes (from homesteaders and small-lot farmers to high volume producers). We also operate the ALERT Line, an anonymous call line dedicated to providing producer-to-producer support, as well as resources and education in response to public concerns for farm animal welfare. Through the ALERT Line, AFAC is also able to dispatch Livestock Emergency Response Trailers to help animals in emergency situations (roll-overs, barn collapse, fire, etc).
