Keeping Livestock Cool in this Week’s Scorching Temperatures
Extension Coordinator with Alberta Farm Animal Care, Melissa Moggy, says this time of year, beef cattle are out to pasture where farmers might not see them everyday.
“They might not have easy access to shade and depending on where we are in the province, if we haven’t had a lot of rain, there might not be a great deal of water if we have a natural source instead of a man-made source for water. We need to keep that in mind when we’re giving access for water.”

New Livestock Welfare Survey
Now is your opportunity to help provide a clear picture of livestock welfare in Alberta.
A new survey is underway from July 3 to Oct. 31 targeting the collection of input from individuals and organizations across the sector. AFAC is encouraging all producers to participate.
The survey is part of a new Livestock Welfare Engagement Project, facilitated by Alberta Farm Animal Care, with an aim to support an accurate understanding of the animal welfare landscape in Alberta from the livestock industry’s perspective. This project was requested and is being funded by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

Scheele, a hatching egg producer and a member of the board with the Alberta Hatching Egg Producers, has been a member of the AFAC board for 5 years. She is a committed ambassador for animal welfare in Alberta’s livestock sector.

Slaughter Without Stunning
What is Slaughter Without Stunning (SwS)?
Prior to conventional slaughter in Canadian abattoirs, animals are rendered insensible (“stunned”) using a variety of methods. Slaughter without stunning means that animals are not rendered insensible prior to slaughter. This is most commonly done in observance of certain religious requirements. Though not synonymous, it is sometimes called religious or ritual slaughter.
