Tools for success
The 2019 LCC was themed “Partners in Progress: Tools for success.” Some of the best examples of new, species-specific innovations that are adding to the toolbox were discussed in presentations on new research findings regarding poultry behavior and lighting and on progress toward a new Feedlot Assessment Tool.
Understanding animal behavior can unlock new doors to welfare and productivity, says Dr. Karen Schwean Lardner of the University of Saskatchewan. She explained new findings that improve the understanding of how factors such as circadian rhythms can impact this behaviour in poultry.

Having the right framework to allow for benchmarking and assessment is critical to support continual improvement, says Dr. Joyce Van Donkersgoed of Alberta Beef Health Solutions, who explained how the new Feedlot Assessment Tool will work.
“Resources such as the right assessment tool are incredibly valuable,” she says. “When we apply them to improve animal care, this also improves many other things such as animal health and performance. At a broader level these resources provide pillars of our social license to operate.”
Thank you to Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association for sponsoring this presentation.
