Congratulations to our AFAC Awards of Distinction winners
Each year AFAC likes to draw attention to some good news stories by honouring individuals or groups who are dedicated to animal care day in and day out.
The AFAC Awards of Distinction were initiated in 2001 to recognize individuals and groups who have made exceptional contributions in the field of livestock welfare and those who work hard to advance the mandate of AFAC and the welfare of livestock in Alberta. They champion trusted best practices along with new, innovative ideas to improve and ensure high standards of animal care and well-being. They also provide outstanding examples both within and outside the industry as leaders and ambassadors.
For 2019, the Award of Distinction for Communication was presented to Brenda Schoepp for her remarkable contributions over 40 years of championing and sharing the story of farm animal care as an international mentor, inspirational speaker and creative writer, all while actively farming and ranching.
With a wealth of outstanding achievements, Brenda is very well-known throughout Canadian agriculture as a dedicated ambassador, educating, advocating and telling the story of agriculture through her various activities. Among many platforms, Brenda has been a strong and consistent leading voice as a provincial and national columnist often showcasing the importance of animal welfare.
The Award of Distinction for Industry Leadership was presented to beef producer Stacey Simpson for providing a leading example of devotion to farm animal care on her family farm. “She has always shown a keen interest and concern for animals,” says proud grandpa Vernon Simpson who nominated her for the award.”
While applying a high level of animal care and driving continual improvement on her operation, Stacey is active in sharing knowledge both with other producers, for example via Open Farm Days she hosts each year. She is recognized among peers as always going above and beyond to ensure optimal animal welfare practices.
